Boiler Heaters

Boiler Systems’ in Plumbing

In U.S.A., most of the homes are heated either with through gas or electric furnaces, a Boiler or through a fireplace. The process of heating in boiler heaters involve heating of water, and production of steam or hot water for heating purpose. If steam is produced via boilers, it is distributed through pipes to steam radiators. On the other hand, hot water is distributed through baseboard radiators, or sometimes radiant floor system.

Installation of Boiler Heaters:

Now days, combinations of water heater and boiler are available in the market. These single units are easier to install and are much more efficient. Following are the steps to install these boiler heater:

  • A plywood panel has to be installed on the basement wall. This plywood will serve as mounting panel for your boiler heater.
  • You need to run new plumbing, gas, and electricity lines to the panel.
  • Take metal brackets and screw them to the base panel for the new boiler. Now hang your boiler heater on to the bracket heaters.
  • Make two holes (4 inch diameter) exhaust vent and air intake vent on the house walls. Make sure that intake vent is above the snow line and exhaust vent is 12 inches away from a window.
  • With the help of PVC pipes and fittings, make exhaust and air intake vent from boiler to the wall.
  • Now connect both cold and hot water lines to the boiler to deliver water to the boiler and from it to different house fixtures.
  • It’s time to connect your gas line and electricity cable to the combination boiler.
  • To regulate the hot water production, use an outdoor temperature sensor.
  • Use a PVC condensate line with the limestone neutralizer from the heater to a nearby sink or drain.
  • Turn your combination boiler on, and it will start heating water immediately.

Problems and Repairs of Boiler Heaters:

A damaged and/or faulty boiler heaters can be cause of real misery. Usually, these faults occur during winter season, when after giving them long rest, we force them to work again. Some of these repairs are expensive, while some faults can be addressed at home, without spending a fortune. Some of the common problems are:

  • No Hot Water If you are not getting hot water from your boiler, it could be because of many reasons. For instance, broken diaphragms, airlock, or valve problems, issues with thermostat, or low levels of water. First check, if the issue is because of thermostat, or is it because of any other part. You may need to replace damaged part with a new one.

If you are not sure about the issue, you better call a boiler engineer, who can help you in solving your problem.

  • Leaking of Boiler Water can be leaked due to many reason. Depending on where water is leaking from. This problem cannot be solved at home by yourself, even if you find the source of the leak.
  • Losing Pressure of Boiler If the pressure of the boiler drops too low, your central heating system will not work properly. If the pressure on built-in pressure gauge of your boiler is below 1, you have an issue with it. This matter should also be addressed by calling an engineer.

Winterizing Your Home

Prepare for Winter

Have you prepared your home for winter? When cold winds are combined with winter precipitation and low temperatures, it can cause you a lot of trouble when it comes to the exterior and interior of your house. Here are some of the most common household problems that you can expect to occur during the winter season, and some tips on how to avoid them as well.

A Leaking Roof

If you don’t pay enough attention to your roof, some roof leaks may occur. But this can also happen because of the roof’s poor design, even if you have been paying a lot of attention to your roof. If you live in a place that gets a lot of snow, the best thing to do is to inspect your roof in order to see if there are any problems before the winter season actually begins.

Another thing that can cause leaks in your home’s walls, trim and roof is a clogged gutter. Cleaning the gutters each fall can save you a lot of time, money, and trouble in general later on.

Air Leaks

Air leaks can raise your energy costs by causing the heating system and drafts. This is especially true when there are air leaks around windows and doors. Also, heating system breakdowns can be very uncomfortable (and expensive) during the winter. So, make sure that everything is in one piece ahead of time and you will enjoy the winter.

Burst Pipes

Burst pipes can cause a lot of damage to your home, especially during the winter. Having good heat circulation and proper insulation can prevent this from happening. Always leave the heat on and the cabinet doors open when the cold weather strikes.

Tree Branches Can Cause Some Trouble

Tree branches can be problematic during the winter. The reason for this is because they can damage your fence, landscaping, and even home by falling if they are too stressed due to snow, ice, or even just some moisture. Save yourself some trouble by trimming dead branches from big trees. Cutting back trees from your roof is another good thing to do, so do it whenever possible.

Ice dams can also cause a lot of trouble because they cause leaks. So, keep an eye on your roof and save yourself some money and time by spotting them early and preventing any damage from being done to your home.

Ultimately, even if your home is well maintained, it is still not 100% safe from appliance and system breakdowns. They can still happen from time to time, and if they do, your best option would be to hire a professional to take care of them.
